Trait Theories

Focus on personal qualities and characteristics organized around the big 5 framework

  1. Traits can predict leadership
  2. Traits do a better job prediciting the emerge of leaders than they do in distinguishing effectiveness

Behavioural Theories

 

Initiating structure = leaders define & structure his & the employees role in search for goal attainment. Behaviour organize work, work relationships & goals.

Consideration = a person's job relationships are characterizised by mutual trust, respect for employee's ideas & feelings.
-> helps employees with personal problems, friendly & approachable, treats everybody equally

 

Contingency Theory : Fielders Model

Group performance depends on the proper match between the leader's style and the degree to which the situation gives the leader control. Determined by asking about the LEAST PREFFERED COWORKER

 

 

Leader-member relations

Degree of confidence, trust & respect workers have for their leader

Task structure

Degree to which job assignments are structured / unstructured

Position power

Degree of influence a leader has over power variables such as hiring, firing, discipline, promotions & salary increases
