1. Reformation
European movement aimed initially at reforming the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church.
2. Beowulf
The longest epic poem in Old English. Classic tale of the triumph of good over evil, and divides neatly in to three acts.
3. William The Conqueror & The Battle of Hastings
Fought in 1066 between the Norman French army of Duke William II of Normand and an English Army under the Anglo-Saxon king Harold Godwinson, beginning the Norman conquest of England.
4. Anglo-Saxons
Were warrior farmers and came from North Western Europe. They began to invade Britain while the Romans were still in control. Were Pagans but gradually converted to Christianity over time.
5. Old English
The language of the Anglo-Saxons, a highly inflected language with a largely Germanic vocabulary, very different from modern English
6. Normans
Invaded England and their descendants replace the Anglo-Saxons as the ruling class of England
7. Allegory
A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning. Typically a moral or political one.
8. Middle English
