Check for approach

  • Frictions: OFF
  • Trim: OFF
  • Carb heat: FULL ON
  • Governor: ON
  • Landing light: ON
  • NAV ight: AS REQ.
  • Fuel: Endurance XXX minutes
  • T's & P's: GREEN
  • RPM: 104%
  • Warnings / cautions: NONE
  • Next: safety window

Safety window

  • 30 KIAS / 300 ft ROD / left pedal
  • Decision: Land / go around

General emergency procedure

  • If nose turns left or right, engine fire, or strong vibrations enter AR and analyze cause (engine, drive, TR)
  • In all other cases: RPPAA (rotor RPM, power, position, analyze, action)

Power failure in flight (nose turns left)

  • Enter AR
    • Collective down, nose up, heading
    • 65 KIAS / 97-110 %RRPM (max glide: 75 KIAS / 90 %RRPM, increase to 97 %RRPM <500 ft AGL)
  • Air restart (do not attempt before AR is established, if engine failure expected, or <2’000 ft AGL)
    • Mixture: FULL RICH
    • Throttle: Closed then cracked slightly (10°)
    • Starter: Actuate with left hand
  • "Mayday, mayday, mayday, HB-..., making an emergency landing near ..."
  • Perform AR landing
    • If time permits: Fuel valve OFF
    • At 40 ft AGL begin cyclic flare
    • At 8 ft AGL apply forward cyclic and raise collective

Power failure in hover

  • Push right pedal
  • Raise collective, when helicopter starts descending

Governor failure

  • Grip throttle firmly to override governor
  • Governor OFF
  • Control RPM manually

Loss of tail rotor thrust in flight (nose turns right)

  • Enter AR with 70 KIAS
  • Roll throttle into overtravel spring
  • Perform AR landing, preferably on hard surface

Loss of tail rotor thrust in hover

  • Roll throttle off into overtravel spring
  • Raise collective

Loss of tail rotor control in flight (pedal stuck)

  • Identify “critical speed” (lowest speed at which nose does not turn, when collective is raised at vario 0)
  • If critical speed <40 KIAS: Land with critical speed on hard surface; avoid deaccelerating below critical speed
  • If critical speed >=40 KIAS: Enter AR with 70 KIAS and perform AR landing with throttle rolled into overtravel spring

Engine fire in flight

  • Enter AR
  • Cabin heater OFF and cabin vents ON
  • If engine is running: Land normally, then mixture OFF and fuel valve OFF
  • If engine is NOT running: Fuel valve OFF and complete AR to ground
  • Master battery OFF
  • If time permits: Apply rotor brake
  • Exit helicopter

Engine fire at start

  • Crank (to suck flames into engine)
  • If engine starts: Run 50-60 %RPM for short time (30s)
  • Mixture OFF and fuel valve OFF
  • Master battery OFF
  • If time permits: Apply rotor brake
  • Exit helicopter

Electrical fire

  • Master battery OFF and Alt OFF
  • Control RPM manually
  • Cabin vents ON
  • Land immediately
  • Mixture OFF and fuel valve OFF
  • If time permits: Apply rotor brake
  • Exit helicopter

LOW RPM

  • Lower collective
  • Roll throttle on
  • Apply aft cyclic

CARBON MONOXIDE

  • Cabin heater OFF and cabin vents ON
  • If light is accompanied by symptoms of CO poisoning (headache, drowsiness, dizziness):Land immediately

OIL

If oil pressure gauge confirms pressure loss: Land immediately

MR TEMP, MR CHIP, TR CHIP

  • If light is accompanied by indication of a problem (e.g., noise, vibration, temperature rise): Land immediately

CLUTCH

  • If light flickers or stays on >10 s: Pull clutch circuit breaker
  • If light is accompanied by indication of a drive system failure (e.g., noise, vibration): Reduce power, prepare to enter AR, and land immediately

LOW FUEL

  • Out of fuel in max. 5 min (all alu) or in 10 min (bladder) at MCP

Tachometer failure

  • Use remaining tach to monitor RPM
  • Allow governor to control RPM

ALT

  • Switch off non-essential electrical equipment (i.e. landing lights, nav lights and outside CTR, TMA, RMZ, or approach also radio, navigation, and flarm)
  • Alt OFF, after 1 s alt ON
  • If light stays ON: Land as soon as practical

BRAKE

  • Release rotor brake immediately

STARTER ON

  • If light stays on after starter button is released: Mixture OFF and master battery OFF

GOV OFF

  • Governor ON

Turbulences

  • Reduce airspeed to between 60 KIAS and 0.7 VNE, but no lower than 57 KIAS
  • Minimize cyclic control inputs; do not overcontrol
  • Depart area of turbulence or land as soon as practical

Right roll in low G

  • Apply aft cyclic
  • Do not apply lateral cyclic
