The Dynamics of Change:

Khoikhoi:

  • South-western cape during 15th century
  • 12 chiefdoms- ruled by male figures
  • no armies, no miitary leader

San:

  • were the earliest people in South Africa
  • the San were nearly exterminated, by the whites

Freedom Charter

  • was adopted in Kliptown, Johannisburg 1955 by the congress of the peple
  • content:
    • people shall govern (right to vote, some rights), all national groups:equal rights, share countrey`s wealth, equal before the law, equal human rights, free eductaion,peace and friendship
  • made by the people of South Africa

-> made because government can only claim laws by ful l authority

-> strive together, till they`ve won

  • government: police-> against " is a communist document"& the governement prohibited the spread the spread of its idea

The first free elections

vote of the cetury: 26-29 April 1994:

  • all people(all races) were allowed to vote was between 26-29 April
  • 86% of the population went to the polling stations
  • also the election marked the four-year process that ended arpartheid
  • ANC won (African National Congress)-> leader Nelson Mandela
  • gained 62,65% of the votes

Mandela`s Statement- presidential inauguration

  • glory, hope to newborn liberty    
  • a new society: equality, living together    
  • bad things happened in the past    
  • now: liberate (poverty, deprivation, suffering, gender ...)    
  • "united, democratic, non racial, non sexist government"

Xenophobia in South Africa:

  • May 2008 outbreak
  • "foreigners" from other parts of S.A. were attacked
  • because of apartheid:
    • blacks seen as illegal immigrants who steal jobs
    • whites are bringing jobs/ investment
  • are trying to fight against it
  • license: from zero to hero in S.A.

The definition of Black Conscoiusness (about 1969)

 

  • Black Consciouss Movement - BCM
  • Steve Biko was the leader
  • aims:
    • supporting blacks, re- evaluate black, give blacks new self-confidence(effort, cultere, religion, outlook), liberation, want a free self
  • achieved:
    • correcting false images(culture, education, religion),stop the classification in dif. groups, make the blacks clear that the whites want to subjugate them

Problems of Blacks:

  • are a group, which is isolated (Townships: special area for non whites)
  • are discriminated (shin-color, laws, cruelity, etc.)
  • have not the same chances (job,government,society, education)
  • -> Freedom Charteer
  • "Darwin" !

Sowets Uprising-South:

  • war: against apartheid
  • June 16th , 1976 students protest against school system: want to learn English
  • Demostration ended violenty by the police
  • The time marks the beginning of violent struggle against the apartheid regime
  • non- violent: demonstration, without weapons, friendly
  • police: tear-gas, helicopters, guns

    • corruption within ANC-Jacob Zuma
    • misuse of power
    • racism: black police-> kill blacks
