enduring, evaluative beliefs about general aspects of life that go beyong specific objects and situations, different in different cultures

people hold them without always knowing why

more general than attitudes, Sammlung von Werten

refer to social, economic or political systems, contain ideas that explain those systems and how they should be run

can influence values, attitudes and intentions to commit behaviours

attitudes = comprising sets of evaluative beliefs about an attitude object, can be simple or complex, can be consistent or inconsistent

complex + inconsistent = moderate position, when actively thought about it

1. knowledge function: useful schemas/mental guides that make sense of the complex social world, helps people to deal with attitude object quickly (important to feel confident in the accuracy and legitimacy) -> es gibt Dinge die zu komplex sind 

2. utilitarian function: help to obtain rewards and avoid punishments, impression management function

3. value expressive function: allow to express their values (these are the most resistant to change)

4. ego defensive function: protect from psychological threats 

being exposed repeatedly to a person or object can cause people to form more positive attitudes towards them

does not require a person to take any action/thoughts towards the attitude object (unaware) 

- familiar faces > unfamiliar faces, determines the extent to which we are attracted to other people

- stimulus increases until a peak is reached -> familiarity breeds contempt

a neutral stimulus is repeatedly paired with another stimulus that already evokes a positive or a negative reaction 

formation of attitudes: stimulus is associated with an object with a negative/positive response, a negative/positive attitude may form 

subliminal conditioning: attitude learning = independent of conscious awareness

awareness enables people to correct the tendency

a behaviour is followed immediately by a positive outcome and is more likely to be repeated

die Effekte sind relativ klein und machen nur einen kleinen Anteil von Einstellungen aus, aber: solche Einstellungen sind schwerer zu verändern und eher ausschlaggebend fürs Verhalten

-> Persönlichkeitsmerkmale können vererbt werden, die zu Einstellungen führen

direkt: kann nicht beobachtet werden, Person trifft selber Aussage (meist mit attitude scales)

einfach und nicht invasiv, aber Kontrolle wird an VP abgegeben 

indirekt: Einstellung wird anhand von beobachtbarem Verhalten gemessen z.B. durch EEG oder Messung von Gesichtsmuskelaktivität

Wahrnehmung eigener Muskelbewegungen wird als Cue interpretiert, wie wir uns fühlen/wie wir etwas bewerten

-> Propriozeptionen: Beobachtung des eigenen Körpers

Emotionen haben einen Einfluss darauf, wie wir ein Einstellungsobjekt bewerten (stimmungsbasiertes Urteil), vor allem wenn uns nicht auffällt, wo die Stimmung herkommt

je neutraler das Objekt ist, desto eher lässt man sich von der Stimmung beeinflussen
