Defining relative clauses
A defining relative clause gives essential information about someone or something. We can use the ralative pronouns who, that, which, when, where or whose. If the relative pronoun (except whose) is the object of the clause, we can leave it out.
Non- defining relative clauses
A non-defining relative clause adds extra information about someone or something. We can use the relative pronouns who, whinch when, where or whose. We cannot leave out the relative pronoun in this kind of relative clause.
I saw a teenager who spends all his time doing sports.
Defining relative clauses
I was on my way back from seeing Nathan, who is in hopital, and suddently I remembered.
Non-defining relative clauses
They are going into town to see a film that begins at seven.
Defining relative clauses
Nathan is due out of hospital on Monday, which is wonderful news.
