How do timed approaches work?
- A suitable point in approach path, which can be accurately determined by the pilot, shall be specified to serve as a checkpoint in timing successive approaches.
- Acft shall be given a time at which to pass the specific point inbound.
- This time shall be determined with the aim of achieving the desired interval between successive landings.
- The applicable separation minima shall be resprected at all times, including period of runway occupancy.
Who defines the time at which acft should pass the specified point in timed approaches?
Approach Control
Each aircraft in the approach sequene shall be cleared to pass the specified point inbound at the previously notified time (or revisions thereof) only .... ?
...after the preceeding aircraft has reported passing the point inbound.
What do you have to take into account considering timed approaches?
- relative speed of acft
- weather conditions
- distance between FAF and airport
- type of approach
What do you have to issue to acft before specifying time to leave approach fix inbound?
time check
Succeeding aircraft shall be cleared for approach when the preceeding aircraft... ?
- has reported that it is able to complete its approach without encountering IMC, OR
- is SICOM (in communication with and sighted by TWR) and reasonable assurance exists, that a normal landing can be accomplished, OR
- las landed
What's the entry procedure form HOC and FRI at WDM (time)?
HOC: 3 min entry procedure
FRI: direct via left turn
What's the entry procedure form HOC and FRI at POL (time)?
both 3 min entry procedure
What are the deemed separations of adjacent holdings FRI - HOC - WIL?
FL160: NO adjacent holdings! only holding at ONE fix
FL150-130: no adjacent holdings HOC-WIL
FL120 and below: adjacent holdings allowed
What are the deemed separations of adjacent holdings FRI - WDM - HOC?
FL160: only holding at ONE fix allowed
FL150 - FL80: holding at FRI and HOC allowed
7000 ft and below: everywhere allowed
What are the deemed separations of adjacent holdings FRI - POL - HOC?
FL160: only holding at ONE fix allowed
FL150 - FL80: holding at FRI and HOC allowed
7000 ft and below: everywhere allowed
What's the non-radar separation between departing acft?
- 1 min; if tracks diverging at least 45° immediately after take-off
- 2 min; if preceeding acft ist 40kts or more faster and both flying same route
- 5 min; while vertical separation does not exist, if departing acft will fly through level of preceeding acft and both fly same route
