What are the basic documents to refer to?
1. ATMM STC - local regulations
2. ATMM Switzerland
3. ATM DOC 4444 ICAO
What are the benefits of procedural control? (6)
- back-up if radar fails
- understand non-radar environment
- better understanding of separation problems
- greater awareness of possible conflicts
- plan ahead
- alternate solutions
Issue ATC clearance to...... ?
...each controlled flight (or portion of controlled flight)
Where (airspace) do we issue ATC clearances and to who (IFR/VFR)?
- IFR and VFR airspace C and D
- IFR airspace E (VFR uncontrolled)
Who's responsible to comply with ATC clearance? What if unable?
pilots
issue amended clearance
What do you have to give VFR flights in airspace D?
entry clearance
no particular routing or cruising level (LOP)
In airspace D, segregate VFR from busy portions by...?
- max / min altitudes
- line between positions ("extended center line")
- time limit
What is a clearance limit? Examples?
The point to which an aircraft is granted an ATC clearance.
- destination aerodrome
- reporting point
- controlled airspace boundary
Clearances relating to levels shall consist of what?
- cruising level(s)
- levels at which specified points are to be crossed
- place or time to start climb/descent
- rate of climb/descent
- detailed instructions concerning departure/approach levels
Name different components of an ATC clearance.
- clearance limit
- route of flight
- level instructions
- speed instructions
- entry clearance
What should you do if terminal delay is expected?
authorise aircraft to cruise at reduced speed to absorb delay
Where should you never give speed instructions?
holding
What are methods for vertical speed control?
- increase/reduce ROC/ROD (expedite)
- instruct specific ROC/ROD
What is a clearance expiry time?
The time at which an ATC clearance automatically expires, if the flight or part of the flight has not started.
Where to you provide separation and to who?
- IFR-IFR in airspace C, D and E
- IFR-VFR in airspace C
- IFR and SVFR (C and D)
- SVFR (C and D)
What types of separation do exist?
- vertical
- horizontal -> longitudinal and lateral
What could require increased separation? (4)
- wake turbulence
- adverse weather
- unlawful interference
- emergency situations
What actions to take in case of loss of separation?
- issue essential traffic information
- issue intructions to re-establish separation (if not possible, use emergency vertical separation)
An aircraft may be assigned a ...... which another has reported ...... ?
level / vacating
What should you consider when assigning "vacated" levels?
In case of severe turbulence or cruise climb, clearance to be withheld until vacating aircraft has reported a separated level.
Give consideration to different aircraft types / different rates, when holding in same holding pattern.
Which numbers/letters in strip marking are often mixed up?
4-9 / 1-7
5/S
How do you write time?
normally in minutes only
if any doubt, use 4 digits
UTC
How do you write corrections?
Cross out incorrect data with double lines and enter correct information.
Previous data should be readable, no erasures!
How to you mark updating?
Cross out old data with single line and enter new data.
Previous data should be readable.
What's the exception in updating strips?
cross out vacated level only after pilot reports leaving/passing level OR observe mode C
How do you mark incorrect data?
Any item of any aircraft reported which is NOT IN ACCORDANCE with previously issued clearance or approval, should be recorded ALONGSIDE THE RELEVANT DATA and CIRCLED. All such information to be confirmed with aircraft concerned.
How do you write restrictions (e.g. subject to)?
below a line
OR
"RSYD SWR100"
How do you indicate to cross a point at a certain level or below?
-----
120
OR
120-
"The minus sign after the number indicates the restriction"
How do you indicate to cross a point at a certain level or above?
120
------
OR
120+
"The plus sign after the number indicates the restriction."
How do you indicate climb / descent?
Place arrov right side of cleared level.
How do you indicate "depart not later than time 45"?
45 –
Write the latest time the clearance is valid followed by a minus sign.
How do you indicate "reach FL120 at time 26 or earlier"?
120/26–
How do you indicate "cross FRI at time 55 or earlier"?
FRI/55–
How do you indicate "depart not before than time 45"?
45 +
Write the earliest time the clearance is valid followed by a plus sign.
What's the strip marking and phraseology for crossing a fix at a certain time or later?
VEROX/55+
"Cross VEROX at (15)55 or later."
How do you mark a significant point (not preprinted)?
Identifier in appropriate location:
FRI
What if the point is located abeam another point?
symbol to indicate abeam:
--I FRI
When do you use checkmarks?
When information has been passed (and approved!) to another unit/pilot, next to the information.
How do you write expected approach time? What if no delay expected?
EAT 25
^
How do you indicate instruction to hold?
H
