Name the two important boundary lines of Switzerland.
CTA boundary (Zurich / Geneva Control Area)
Separation line MITTELLAND/JURA - ALPS
What is the CTA boundary? Where is it?
divides Switzerland into Control Area Geneva and Control Area Zurich
Le Noirmont - St. Petersinsel - Niesen - Fiesch
Why is there a corne in the southeastern part of the CTA boundary?
to prevent civil IFR approaches inbound Sion from penetrating CTA Zurich
What's the relevance of the CTA boundary?
to know who's responsible for VFR traffic requesting to climb into airspace C
Geneva or Zurich Delta
What is the separation line MITTELLAND/JURA - ALPS?
divides Switzerland in a northern and southern part
Which airspace class do you never find in Switzerland (except CTRs and TMAs)?
D
What's the general airspace classification within Switzerland (outside CTRs and TMAs)?
Mittelland/Jura:
GND - 2000 ft -> G
2000 ft - FL 100 -> E
above -> C
Alps:
GND - 2000 ft -> G
MIL OFF: 2000 ft - FL150 -> E
MIL ON: 2000 ft - FL130 -> E
above -> C
Which airspaces do you find in Switzerland?
C
D (only CTRs and TMAs)
E
G
What are the two main criteria points for VMC minimas?
distance from clouds
flight visibility
What are the VMC minimas in the different airspace classes?
(B,) C, D, E:
distance from cloud = 1'500 m horizontally; 1'000 ft vertically
flight visibility = 8 km at and above FL100; 5 km below FL100
G, (F) above 3'000 ft AMSL or above 1'000 ft AGL (whichever is higher):
distance from cloud = 1'500 m horizontally; 1'000 ft vertically
flight visibility = 8 km at and above FL100; 5 km below FL100
G, (F) at or below 3'000 ft AMSL or 1'000 ft AGL (whichever is higher):
distance from clouds = clear of clouds + surface/water in sight
flight visibility = 5 km* (*may be reduced but not to less than 1'500 m (except helicopters))
Name the specifications of airspace class C. (5)
- IFR and VFR permitted
- all flights provided with ATS (all subject to ATC clearance)
- separation: IFR - IFR, IFR - VFR
- VFR receive traffic info about other VFR (may request avoidance action)
- VFR flights may be cleared at IFR levels
Name the specifications of airspace class D. (4)
- IFR and VFR permitted
- all flights provided with ATS
- separation: IFR - IFR, traffic information about all other
- VFR receives traffic info about all other flights (may request avoidance advice)
Name the specifications of airspace class E. (4)
- IFR and VFR permitted
- IFR provided with ATS
- separation: IFR - IFR
- all flights receive traffic info as far as possible
Name the specifications of airspace class G. (2)
- only VFR permitted
- FIS provided if requested
What's the difference between airspace class C and D regarding IFR and VFR?
C: IFR separated from VFR
D: IFR receives traffic info about VFR
What's the general speed restriction and to who does it apply?
IFR and VFR: below FL100 max. 250 kts IAS
MIL-traffic excempted!
What airspace classes do the CTRs and TMAs of Switzerland have?
all CTRs -> D
TMAs ZUR and GEN -> C
regional civil and military -> D
Are there any temporary CTRs and TMAs in Switzerland? Where? Where are activations published?
no tempo MIL CTRs
tempo MIL TMAs: Sion, Locarno, Alpnach
published in the DABS, NOTAM and NOMIL A
What is a FIZ? (6)
Flight Information Zone
- airspace of defined dimensions
- usually around an aerodrome (LSZS)
- flight information + alerting service
- AFIS (aerodrome flight information service)
- compulsory two-way radio communication
- rules of surrounding airspace class
What means TRA?
Temporary Reserved Area
Where do you find airforce training areas in Switzerland?
all airspace outside the main airways G5 and A9
What are the two main airways of Switzerland?
G5 (south-west to north-east)
A9 (north to south)
TRAs LOW: level? airspace class? exception?
FL130 - 280
airspace classes C, E, G
2 special cases:
- TRA JURA: starts at FL100
- TRA MISOX: starts at FL130 but permanently delegated to civil operations (ACC ZUR), may be occupied at short notice
Name all the TRAs LOW from west to east, incl. number.
- TRA Jura (LS-T 10) / TRA Jura Plus (LS-T 10+)
- TRA Prealpes, (LS-T 21)
- TRA Oberland (LS-T 22)
- TRA Bas Valais (LS-T 23)
- TRA Haut Valais (LS-T 24)
- TRA Schratten (LS-T 31)
- TRA Goms (LS-T 32)
- TRA Saentis (LS-T 40) / TRA Saentis Plus (LS-T 40+)
- TRA Calanda (LS-T 51) / TRA Calanda Plus (LS-T 51+)
- TRA Beverin (LS-T 52) / TRA Beverin Plus (LS-T 52+)

Which TRAs are combined in the "TRA LOW South East (LS-T 60)" / "TRA LOW South East Plus (LS-T 60+)"?
Misox, Corvatsch / Misox Plus
What are the TRAs PLUS? What are the conditions?
TRAs can be extended for 1 hour per half a day.
