Which kind of maps for which purpose do exist?

A triangle:

thematic: statistical maps, graphs, diagrams, distribution maps

weather maps

navigational: digital way-finder, GPS, aero-/hydronautical carts

road maps

reference: atlas, globe

satellite image map

-storage of spatial information, dictionary of features: land, water, landmarks

-give answer to spatial questions. where?, what?, when?

-show distribution of phenomena in space for a specific purpose

- illustrate spatial patterns; base map is reference, thematic overlay

- tell a story: qualitativ and quantitative informationa

navigational charts

guide for movement in space (where to go?, how far?, how to geth there?)

Why these common map types?

-> categories are fuzzy , overlapping, many classifixation schemes exist, all types of maps include generalisation and other common attributes

- map types as a funciton of diversity of human needs and purposes

- human need to comunicate information for a particular goal

- map as a human activity: from map in the head to actual map
