benign [adjective]
kind and nice
Yearlong endurance means the UAV does not have to be launched near its area of operation; instead it can be flown from more weather-benign regions and ferry itself to the operating area.
breeding ground [idiom]
a place where animals breed (literal meaning)
The exceptional growth of air travel in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific region has proved to be a breeding ground for the development of very large jets like the B747-8 or the A 380.
dispense with (to)
to do without
to set aside
The increased range of aircraft entering the market in the mid- to late 90s meant that airlines could dispense with lengthy and expensive intermediate technical stops on their way from Europe to the Far East.
endurance [noun]
The length of time an aircraft can remain in the air. The power produced by the engines and the flight conditions can be regulated to give the aircraft the greatest speed, the greatest range or the greatest endurance.
Yearlong endurance means the UAV does not have to be launched near its area of operation; instead it can be flown from more weather-benign regions and ferry itself to the operating area.
ferry [verb]
Flying an aircraft for the purpose of returning it to base, delivering an aircraft from one location to another, or moving an aircraft to and from a maintenance base.
Yearlong endurance means the UAV does not have to be launched near its area of operation; instead it can be flown from more weather-benign regions and ferry itself to the operating area.
Military intelligence [noun phrase]
a part of the military whose duties include obtaining and studying information about another county’s ability to fight a war
Unmanned air vehicles have the potential to transform military intelligence and the kind of data that is now becoming possible to obtain.
presistent [adjective]

Despite the airline's denial, there have been persistent rumours that Emirates Airlines has as many as forty aircraft parked up at al Maktoum airport due to an acute pilot-shortage.
reconnaissance [noun]
the use of soldiers or aircraft to go into an area and get information about an enemy
By using UAVs to undertake reconnaissance missions, the lives of many people could be saved, because the UAV can take the role that was previously held by soldiers.

A raft of technology development programmes support the effort, one of the most crucial being tests of the power gearbox.
baseline [noun]
a quantity, value, or fact used as a standard for measuring other quantities, values, or facts
Discernible from the earlier Trent 700 by its much larger 112-in.-diameter fan, the Trent 7000 has a bypass ratio of 10:1, double that of the baseline powerplant.
bypass ratio [noun phrase]
the ratio in an aircraft engine (such as a turbofan) of the amount of airflow that is bypassed around the engine's core to the amount that passes through the core
The focus is making sure we optimize this new layout of engine in the way it installs to the aircraft, and that's really driven by the fact we are moving to a higher bypass ratio.
discernible [adjective]
able to be seen, noticed, or understood
Discernible from the earlier Trent 700 by its much larger 112-in.-dia. fan, the Trent 7000 has a bypass ratio of 10:1
ETOPS (Extended Operations)
The term used to signify Extended Range Operation with Two-Engine Airplanes but the meaning was changed when regulations were broadened to include aircraft with more than two engines. It refers to the standards and recommended practices (SARPS) issued by ICAO for aircraft to fly long-distance routes that had been off-limits to twin-engined aircraft.
The tour formed part of the final function and reliability element of the aircraft's certification program and gave Airbus an opportunity to conduct reliability testing for extended-range twin-engine operational performance standards (ETOPS) certification.
frozen configuration [idiomatic phrase]
one meaning of the verb to freeze is 'to stop moving and keep completely still'. The meaning as it is used in the Rolly Royce article derives from that. When somebody states that the design or configuration of somethign under development has been frozen, what they mean is that a decision on the configuration or design has been finalised and that any further work will be conducted on the basis of that.
Rolls-Royce has frozen the configuration of its UltraFan geared engine concept and run the new core for its next-generation turbofan family even as it prepares to certify its latest large commercial powerplant, the Trent 7000.
geared engine [noun phrase]
The geared turbofan is a more efficient type of turbofan aircraft engine. Gears allow the compressor-turbine assembly and the fan to spin at different angular velocities.
Roll-Royce has frozen the configuration of its UltraFan geared engine concept and run the new core for its next-generation turbofan family even as it prepares to certify its latest large commercial powerplant, the Trent 7000.
