What's the definition of RVR?
Runway Visual Range
The range over which the pilot of an aircraft on the centreline of a runway can see the surface, markings or the lights delineating the runway or identifying its centre line.
How can RVR be assessed?
- human observer method (nr of runway lights; height of 5m above)
- electronic equipment (IRVR = instrumented RVR, transmissiometer)
What's the minimum RVR if 6 lights can be seen?
min. 360 m
How does a transmissiometer work?
measures atmospheric transmittance between two points in space
transmitter -> beam of light -> photo detector in receiving unit
When is RVR reporting to aircraft started?
- aerodrome met report shows vis 1500 m or less
- RVR display indicates value equal or less than max. for that station
- shallow fog is reported
Which values have to be transmitted on a non-precision or CAT I ILS runway?
TDZ
Which values have to be transmitted on CAT II ILS runway?
TDZ and midpoint (midpoint only if less than TDZ)
Which values have to be transmitted on a ILS CAT III runway?
TDZ, midpoint, stopend
(stopend actually only on request of pilot)
