What's the definition of RVR?
Runway Visual Range
The range over which the pilot of an aircraft on the centreline of a runway can see the surface, markings or the lights delineating the runway or identifying its centre line.
How can RVR be assessed?
- human observer method (nr of runway lights; height of 5m above)
- electronic equipment (IRVR = instrumented RVR, transmissiometer)
What's the minimum RVR if 6 lights can be seen?
min. 360 m
How does a transmissiometer work?
measures atmospheric transmittance between two points in space
transmitter -> beam of light -> photo detector in receiving unit
When is RVR reporting to aircraft started?
- aerodrome met report shows vis 1500 m or less
- RVR display indicates value equal or less than max. for that station
- shallow fog is reported
Which values have to be transmitted on a non-precision or CAT I ILS runway?
TDZ
Which values have to be transmitted on CAT II ILS runway?
TDZ and midpoint (midpoint only if less than TDZ)
Which values have to be transmitted on a ILS CAT III runway?
TDZ, midpoint, stopend
(stopend actually only on request of pilot)
Which values have to be transmitted for LVD?
mitpoint and stopend
Which values have to be transmitted for CAT I departures?
TDZ only
What does "......" mean?
values above measurement
Issue current RVR to each aircraft with ...... ?
take-off or landing clearance
Regardless of the RVR advised, the decision to continue or abort the approach or departure ...... ?
rests solely with the flight crew
RVR values are to be passed to each aircraft at the beginning of ....... and, thereafter, ........ ?
It is also to be passed ...... ?
each approach for landing / whenever there is a significant change in the RVR until the aircraft has landed
(1st contact on TWR frequency and with landing clearance)
before take-off
What is defined as a "significant" change?
one increment or more
Transmission method for CAT I arrival?
"SWR123, RVR runway 32, 1200 metres."
if RVR 550m or more, pass only TDZ (don't include location)
Transmission method for CAT II arrival?
"SWR123, RVR runway 32, 500 metres."
"SWR123, RVR runway 32, touchdow 500 metres, midpoint 450 metres."
TDZ and midpoint, if less than TDZ
Transmission method for CAT III arrival?
"SWR123, RVR runway 32, touchdown 500 metres, midpoint 450 metres, (stopend 450 metres)."
always TDZ + midpoint, stopend on request
How are the numbers spelled?
500 -> five hundred
450 -> four five zero
What if any requested values no available?
"SWR123, RVR runway 32, touchdown 500 metres, midpoint not available, (stopend 450 metres)."
When do we NOT need to specify the location when transmitting?
if we only transmitt TDZ
AND
if transmitting all 3 values, if in order: TDZ - midpoint - stopend
How do you transmit RVR of multiple runways?
"..., RVR runway 32, 500 metres, runway 24, 450 metres."
What do you transmit for other than ILS approaches?
only TDZ
What do you transmit for departures?
only TDZ
(except LVD)
What do you transmit for LVD?
midpoint and stopend;
TDZ on request of pilot
What are the increments of RVR values?
less than 400m: 25 metres
400m or more, not more than 800m: 50 metres
more than 800m: 100m
(if not fitting, round down to next LOWER step)
Transmission if RVR above maximum value?
"... RVR runway 32, above 1500 metres."
Transmission if RVR below minimum value?
"... RVR runway 32, below 50* metres."
(*depending on system)
