What is Factor Analysis?
Is essentially a corrrelational procedure that describes lare amounts of data in smaller, more manageable units by interrelating many correlations at a time.
Is based on the assumption that if several variables correlate highly with one another, it is possible that a common dimesion underlies them.
What is Cattell's definition of a trait?
Permanent reaction tendencies, which are inferred from behavior
Difference between source trait and surface trait
Source Trait-- Cant be seen, but are building blocks of personality and give rise to the observable surface trait
Surface trait- a cluster of observable traits that indicate a source trait
Example: Source trait perfectionism gives rise to many observable surface traits like conscientious, self-disciplined, and compulsive.
