The principles and procedures used in the systematic pursuit of knowledge.
Scientific Method
Act of noting or recording something experienced (seen, heard, etc.)
Observation
Proposed explanation made as a starting point for further investigation.
Hypothesis
Assumed findings are due to chance alone.
Null hypothesis
Assumes there is some sort of correlation or casual trend to be investigated.
Alternate Hypothesis
A procedure undertaken to test a hypothesis.
Experiment
Things or events that can affect the outcome of an experiment.
Variable
A manipulated factor whose variation is determined by the investigator.
Independent variable
Factor whose variaton depends on another factor present.
Dependent variable
Should give the desired outcome of the experiment.
Positive control
Should show no response to the experiment.
Negative control
The upper and lower limits of the data set.
Range
Average of the data set, a calculated central value.
Mean
A measure of the dispersion, relates to the precision of the data set.
Standard deviation
how far "off" from the central value, relates to accuracy of the data set.
Standard error of the mean
a final answer of explanation
conclusion
interpretation of the data and projections as to the meaning of the results.
Discussion
An error resulting from the under representation or lack of representation for a particular factor.
Sampling error
State of being correct, nearness to "true" value.
Accuracy
The resolution of the representation, consistency among values.
Precision
Factor that masks the true relationship of the independent and dependent variables.
Confounder
A testable prediction based upon stipulated hypotheses.
Theory
