what are the types of topologies?
- bus
- ring
- star
- hybrid star-bus
- hybrid star-ring
- full mesh
- partial mesh
- multi point
- point to point
bus topology
a single cable connects all of the computers in a line. terminations are required at each end of the bus to keep data from reflecting at the ends.
ring
connects all the computers on the network with a ring of cable. Data will move in one direction, from one computer to the next. No termination is required.
star
a central connection that links all computers. this offers fault tolerance in case a cable breaks; all other computers will still be able to communicate
hybrid star-ring
fault tolerance of a star, but a ring within the central box.
physical layout of a star, but a logical layout of a ring
hybrid star-bus
shrunk down into a small box
physical star, logical bus. provides fault tolerance
hybrid
when physical topology is combined with a logical or signaling topology
mesh
every node connects to every other node in two or more routes.
full mesh
every computer connects to every other computer
partial mesh
at least two machines have reduntant connections.
point to multi-point
almost like a star topology, but the central point cannot be a device that simply provides a path for information: it must be intelligent. it is a single point through which all others converse
point to point
two computers connect directly together. They require no central device between them.
network technology
an application of a topology and other technologies which provide a way for data to get from one point to another.
ie 10BaseT, 1000BaseF, and 10GBaseLX
coaxial cable
the central core and the braided shield share a common axis.
central core, insulation, a braided metal shield, and a jacket.
coaxial connectors
BNC: like the one on military radios
F-connector: like the one for cable TVs with a screw
twisted pair. two types
UTP (unshielded twisted pair): copper wires with twists that reduce crosstalk or interference. The more twists, the less crosstalk.
STP (shielded twisted pair): twisted pairs of wires surrounded by shielding to protect them from EMI.
CAT ratings
measured in MHZ, or the highest frequency the cable can handle and bandwidth
- 3 16 MHz / 16 Mbps
- 5 100 MHz / 100 Mbps
- 5e 100 MHz / 1000 Mbps
- 6 250 MHz / 10,000 Mbps can use full 100 meter length when used with 10/100/1000BaseT networks. with 10GbaseT networks, it's limited to 55 meters
- 6a 500 MHz / 100,000 Mbps can use full 100 meter length with networks up to 10GbaseT
RJ connectors. two types
RJ 11
- for phones. have 4 wires
RJ 45
- for networks. have 8 wires
fiber optic cabling and connectors
transmit light, making it great for high EMI areas and long-distance transmissions.
4 parts:
the glass core
cladding (which makes light reflect down the fiber)
buffer to give strength
insulating jacket.
fiber types: two types
SMF: lasers
-prevents modal distortion (signals sent at the same time won't ARRIVE at the same time because the paths differ slightly).
MMF: LED lights
