Flashcards
describe the fluid-mosaic model of a membrane structure
phospholipid bilayer with protiens embided
define hydrophilic and hydrophobic and relate these conditions to the structure of phospholiped molecules
hydrophobic is non-soluable (e.x oil)
hydrophilic is soluable (e.x salt)
the phospholipid molecule is part hydrophobic and part hydrophilic
explain how the amphipathic nature of molecules form membranes
phospholipids bond to each other untill the hydrophilic side completely blocks the liquid from coming in contact with the hydrophobic side. (this is how a membrane is formed)
state the structural difference between saturated and un saturated fatty acids in phospholipids
saturated fatty acids are more closely connected to each other
unsaturated fatty acids are more spread apart due to the double bonding of carbon
explain the role of satureated and unsaturated fatty acids in maintaining optimum membrane fluidity.
unsaturated phospholipids make the membrane more fluid.
saturated phospholipids make the membrane more solid.
what does cholestrol do to a membrane
it seperates the phospholipids creating a space making the membrane more fluid.
cholestrol is also called a "fluidity buffer" or "spacer"
what are the 2 categories of membrane proteins
integral proteins and peripheral proteins
describe the amphipathic nature or integral membrane proteins.
integral proteins penetrate the hydrophobic interior of the lipid bilayer
they can: transport particals, enzymatic activity, signal transduction and attach to the cytoskeleton.
describe the structure of glycolipids and glycoproteins in the plasma membrane.
glycolipids= carbohydrate ( normally less than 15 sugars) +lipid
glycoprotein= carbohydrate ( normally less than 15 sugars) +protein
