Cartes-fiches

What is a front?

elongated zone of strong horizontal temperature gradient

elongated: length ~1000km / width ~100-200km
strong: ~5 K/100km

Two kinds of extreme events

* Statistical (extreme in comparison to climatological distribution during previous decades)

* Impact-related (strong impact on society

Extreme precipitation on different scales

* Convective precipitation extremes (small temporal / spacial scales; local and strong coupling between moisture and dynamics)

-> can lead to flash floods

* Large-scale precipitation extremes (large accumulated precipitation over several days; triggered by synoptics)

-> can lead to large-scale floods

IWV

integrated water vapor

Moisture integrated over all height levels(can be observed via satellite)

IVT

integrated vapor transport

horizontal transpot over all height levels ( qv integrated over dp

V-SMOW

Vienna standard mean ocean water

(to compare concentrations of heavy water isotopes)
