What is diversity?

Dissimilarities or differences among people due to age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, education, experience, physical appearance, capabilities and disabilities, and any other characteristic that is used to distinguish between people.

What does "glass ceiling" mean?

A metaphor alluding to the invisible barriers that prevent minorities and women from being promoted to top corporate positions.

Median age in the United States is 37.8 years, by 2030, 20 percent of the population will be over 65

What do race and ethnicity currently look like in terms of diversity in business?

The racial and ethnic diversity of the population is increasing.

Race (genetic): American, Malay, Ethiopian, Mongolian and Caucasian (Encyclopedia Britannica).

Ethnicity: Grouping based on shared characteristics such as national origin, language and/or culture.

Direct impact on workforce.

Also on suppliers, customers etc.

What must be taken into account in regards to religious beliefs?

• Respecting important holy days when scheduling meetings
• Providing flexible time off for religious occasions
• Posting holy days for different religions on the company calendar

What must be taken into account in regards to capabilities and disabilities?

  • Providing reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities
  • Promoting a nondiscriminatory workplace environment
  • Educating the organization about disabilities and AIDS
