Hippocrates : Brain as seat of intelligence. Aristotle: Heart as center of intellect, brain as radiator for cooling blood.

By dissecting animals: Cerebrum in the front and Cerebellum in the back. Cerebrum rather soft and Cerebellum rather hard. Cerebrum for sensation and perception + repository of memory. Cerebellum for movement control.

Nerves = hollow tubes like blood vessels.

Could no5 account for full range of human behaviour. Human mental capabilities exist in mind.

It is continuous with nerves of the body and contains fibers that bring information to and from the grey matter.

It is divided into central devision (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral division (nerves).

Injury can disrupt sensation and movement and thought. Brain communicates with body via nerves. Has different parts with different functions. Operates like machine and follow law of nature.

Muscles cam be caused to twich when nerves are stimulated electrically and the brain itself can generate electricity. --> Nerves are wires that conduct electrical signals to and from the brain.

Just before nerves attach to spinal cord the fibers devide into 2 branches. Dorsal root: enters toward back of the spinal cord. Ventral root enters toward the front. Cutting ventral roots causes muscle paralysis.

They carry sensory information into the spinal cord.
