Vorlesung von Heyl + Altklausurfragen - Die Altklausuren liefen immer nach dem selben Schema ab: 4. Fragen (auf 3 davon kann man sich gut vorbereiten). 1. What is a Blazon? 

Blazon: French for “coat-of-arms” or “shield.” A literary blazon (or blason) catalogues the physical attributes of a subject, usually female

  • (Internal vs. External communication): other characters don't hear what has been said, only the audience

What is the etymology of the word "Drama"? 

Comes from the Greek word "dran" (to do / to act). 

How is an English sonnet structured? 

  • 14 lines
    • Each containing ten syllables
  • iambic pentameter
  • 3 quatrains
  • 1 heroic couplet 
  • abab, cdcd, efef, gg 

What topics are often used in sonnets? 

  • Main concern usually about love
    • "Love is blind" (image of Cupid) 
    • the problematic gap between ideal und reality when it comes to the person you love 
  • "Tempus fugiti" (time flies) 
    • literary works will endure, they are the only permanent monument a person can leave
  • Awareness of cultural / historical context and ideas (topoi) current at the time 
    • time, chance, aging, lust, absence, infidelity,

  • 2 quatrains (octave)

  • Couplet (Paarreim): aa bb
  • envelope pattern (umarmend): abba 
  • tail rhyme (Schweifreim): abcabc 

What is an internal rhyme? 

  • Binnenreim: "East, west, home's best"

 

What is a halft-rhyme? 

  • Less perfect than true rhymes 
    • assonance: connects two words by identical vowels (foam - moan) 
    • consonance: connects two words by identical consonants ( loads - lids) 

What is an eye rhyme? 

  • Looks similar but sounds different (move - dove) 

What is an identical rhyme? 

  • Includes the consonants before the vowel (know - no) 

What is a triple rhyme? 

  • Parallels three syllables (treacherous - lecherous) 

What is a feminine rhyme? 

  • Stressed - unstressed (gender - bender) 

What is a masculine rhyme? 

  • Last syllables stressed in two lines ( fan - man)

What is an enjambement (or run-on lines)? 

  • In poetry, the continuing of a sentence from one line of a poem into the start of the next line 
  • no grammatical break or pause
