What are end-stopped lines?
The line makes sense, it is a functional unit of meaning.
"The spelling does not matter, as long as there is a correspondence in sound when it comes to rhymes."
What is a masculine rhyme?
- Last syllables stressed in two lines ( fan - man)
What is a feminine rhyme?
- Stressed - unstressed (gender - bender)
What is a triple rhyme?
- Parallels three syllables (treacherous - lecherous)
What is an identical rhyme?
- Includes the consonants before the vowel (know - no)
What is an eye rhyme?
- Looks similar but sounds different (move - dove)
What is a halft-rhyme?
- Less perfect than true rhymes
- assonance: connects two words by identical vowels (foam - moan)
- consonance: connects two words by identical consonants ( loads - lids)
What is an internal rhyme?
- Binnenreim: "East, west, home's best"
What end rhymes are there?
- Couplet (Paarreim): aa bb
- envelope pattern (umarmend): abba
- tail rhyme (Schweifreim): abcabc

What is a soliloquy?
Characters talk to themselves or the audience, not the other characters
What's an aside?
- (Internal vs. External communication): other characters don't hear what has been said, only the audience

Dialogue in brief, alternate lines, as in Ancient Greek drama
Describe stages during the 18th century?
- "Verbal scenery" - description of the surroundings
- props and stage design
- illusion of the forth wall
- illusionism "willing suspension of disbelief" vs. Anti-illusionism (narrator, chorus, intrusion of text, de- familiarization)

Blazon: French for “coat-of-arms” or “shield.” A literary blazon (or blason) catalogues the physical attributes of a subject, usually female.
