wish / if only + past perfect = to talk about things you regret doing/not doing in the past

  • I wish / if only I hadn't been so rude to my mother last night

wish / if only + past simple = to talk about things that haven't come true now and thins that might come true in the future

  • I wish / if only I could speak Japanese
  • I wish / if only I was/were lying on a beach somewhere instead of being here. 
    • = ATTENTION!! both are acceptable, but were is more formal

wish / if only + would = to talk about things which are annoying you or about irritating habits.

  • I wish / if only my daughter would wear more confortable clothes.
