democracy

government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents in a manner that affects the co-existence in the larger community (derived from the Greek words "demos" = people and "kratia" =government

compulsory/ official duty

a citizen's obligation to serve in the military

dictatorship

a form of government prevailing in a country where absolute power is exercised by a dictator (e.g. North Korea) or by very few persons (a political party)

optional referendum

an instrument of direct democracy in Switzerland where people vote on subjects which 50,000 eligible voters or at least 8 cantons have petitioned to vote on a federal law

refugee

someone who leaves their country, especially during a war or other threatening event, on account of their nationality, belonging to a certain group, is exposed to serious disadvantages for political or racial reasons (e.g. prison, torture)

federalism

a state structure or political principle of state formation where several federal states combine to work as a whole (federation)

alternative concept

alternative to a concept, for example, referendum or initiative

municipality

local government of a town or district; lowest administrative division (in Switzerland, the hierarchy is: federal government, canton, municipality)

a group of persons advocating a particular cause, engaged in trying to influence legislators or other public officials in favour of that specific cause
