civil law

Satz: There is no competence of the European Parliament for coordinating civil law.

Synonym: judicial decision that serves as an authority for deciding a later case;

ruling

jurisdiction

Satz: The federal court and the state court had concurrent jurisdiction.

Synonym: (1) Power of a court, authority or other official body to decide a legal case or to make an order. (2) Area in which a particular legal system operates. (3) Territory in which this power exists.

defendant

Satz: In the adversarial system, the defendant is not required to give testimony.

Synonym: a person in a law case who is accused of having done something illegal
