Function of Artificial Disc Implants

An intervertebral disc is situated between two vertebras in the spine.

With age or excessive loading, degeneration of the discs can occur, leading to pain and immobility

Metal on Metal

Metal on Polymer

Possible risk and problems with artificial disc implants?

Heterotopic ossification -> leading to a fixation  between the two vertebras affecting the range of movement (Before surgery 15°, after 5 years of surgery 3.3°)

Advantages of Artificial Disc Implants?

the patient maintains normal motion

the patient can return earlier to normal day activities
