Introduction - The cell

S. W.
This flashcard set covers advanced topics in cellular biology and is tailored for university-level students. It delves into the structure and function of key cellular components like the cytoskeleton, which includes microfilaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments, as well as organelles such as the nucleus, nucleolus, and endoplasmic reticulum. The flashcards also explore processes like mitosis, meiosis, and apoptosis, providing insights into cell division and programmed cell death. Medical students and researchers will find this set particularly useful for understanding the intricate details of cell biology and histology.

Anaphase mitosis

division of genetic material into 2 different poles (dark purple)

Chromosomes are separated into sister chromatids

Telaphase and Cytokinesis

Telophase and cytokinesis

  • ‐  Reorganisation of the nucleus.

  • ‐  Formation of two independent cells

Chromosomes de‐condense, nuclear membrane re‐ forms, spindle disassembles, ending mitosis

Cell divides into two, caused by the contraction of the cytoplasm by the cytoskeleton

Necrosis

Necrosis = “Normal” cell death
- Pyknosis: shrinkage and compaction of the nucleus - Karyorrhexis = Fragmentation of the nucleus
- Karyolysis = Dissolution (lysis) of the nucleus

Apoptosis

Apoptosis = Programmed cell death
- Initiated by external and/or internal (DNA damage) signals
- Predetermined sequence of events
- Minimal disturbance to neighbouring cells
