Modals - Rules and obligation
must + verb & have + verb wie verwendet?
Für verpflichtungen (obligations) kann man beides nutzen. (I must go now or I'll... I have to go now or I'll...)
must um Befehle zu erteilen (You must tell me everything. Tom must be home at 8. I must go now)
wenn die verpflichtung nicht vom sprecher kommt ist must möglich aber have to geläufiger (You have to pay to park here > local council. I have to stay until the food is cooked > part of the job)
have to für angewohnheiten (I have to get up early to cook breakfast. Franco has to practise the piano)
must nur in der form und nur für gegenwart und zukunft. alles andere have to
must not + verb & do/does not have to + verb haben andere bedeutung
must not meint "mach es nicht!" und don't have to meint "es ist nicht notwendig"
pronouns and determiners (each & every)
each und every können beide mit der gleichen bedeutung verwendet werden aber manchmal unterscheiden sie sich
- each für individuelle dinge oder leute in einer gruppe (each child drew a picture of her own parents)
- every bekräftigt das alle leute oder dinge in einer gruppe inkludiert sind (every holiday you've mentioned is the kind of holiday I'd hate)
each (aber nicht every) kann von of gefolgt werden
Modals - Rules and obligation
have/has got to
in der sprache und informativen schreiben wird oft has/have got to an stelle von have/has to benutzt.
have/has got to bezieht sich auf eine bestimmte aktion wohingegen have/has to sich auf eine generellen situation bezieht
Modals - giving orders and advice
STRONGER <------> LESS STRONG:
must / had better / ought to/should / could
für die vergangenheit benutzt man eher: should have / ought to have (you should have / ought to have acceptes that job
für negatives: you shouldn't have worn those clothes.
Modals - ability
presens: can und be able to um zu sagen das jemand die fähigkeit besitzt etwas zu tun. can is gängiger im presens, daher eigentlich immer can.
past: in der vergangenheit mit could und was able to. "was able" in bestimten situationen in denen jemand zu etwas fähig war (i was able to meet them because i had a day off). nicht could für so situationen benutzen. nur "couldn't" aber dann auch wasn't able.
rest zeiten: für alle andere zeiten (future, present perfect, ...) benutzt man be able to. can nur im present und could nur im past
Modals - certainty und possibility (gewissheit und möglichkeit)
(certainty)
presens: "must+infinitiv" wenn wir sicher sind das etwas war ist. "can't / couldn't+infinitiv" wenn sicher das etwas nicht wahr.
past: "must have + past participle" oder "might / may / could have + past particple"
(possibility)
presens: kann man "may, might oder could + infinitiv" benutzem.
past: "might, may und could have + past participle"
zukunft: might, may, could (nicht "could not")
Modals - erwartungen
